Gairola House

The extroverted building deviates from the usual peri-urban building typology in India, of a multi-storey apartment stack consisting of simple cubical volumes with identical floor plans and a common entrance.

With a non-identical layout for the individual apartments, the shared courtyard and front setback encourage a vibrant, socially connected urbane lifestyle, while still fulfilling the need for privacy and individuality. Prominent in the juxtaposition of different materials and textures are the facing bricks used to clad the large cantilevered volume at the front and other parts of the building. The ruggedness of the brick and bamboo cladding is offset by the smoothness of cement plaster and glass. The corner glazing further fractures the perceived volumes from the outside while affording expansive views from the inside.

The project was nominated for the “Wienerberger Brick Award 2012” and is featured in the book “Brick 12”.
