Bricks still market leader
Bricks continue to have the largest market share of wall-forming building materials in residential construction in Germany. According to the Federal Statistical Office, at 30.3 percent, almost every third residential building completed in 2020 is predominantly made of bricks. In terms of enclosed volume, bricks also occupy the top position among wall-building materials with a share of 28.8 percent. In the construction of single-family and two-family houses, the market share of brick, at 33.8 percent and 36.9 percent respectively, is also close to the previous year‘s level. From a regional point of view, Bavaria is still the front-runner. There, masonry bricks are by far the most important residential building material with a share of 57.4 percent. In the eastern German states including Berlin, the market share of bricks in completed enclosed space increased by 0.6 percent compared to the previous year.
„Bricks are crisis-proof“
„The difficult general conditions of the past year have not diminished the attractiveness of bricks. Bricks have proven to be crisis-proof,“ says Dr. Matthias Frederichs, Chief Executive of the Federal Association of the German Brick and Tile Industry. „The fact that the supply and sales chains of domestic brick production are regional has certainly contributed to this. Unlike with other products, restrictions on international goods traffic have hardly affected us.“
