Study of the damage mechanisms of building ceramic
materials made of synthetic and idealized raw material mixes caused by freeze-thaw cycling with the help of low-temperature dilatometry (FreezeLTDil)

1 Background

In the relevant standards for all construction products for use outdoors (roofing tiles, masonry bricks, clay pavers as well as tiles and slabs), frost resistance is specified as a requirement.

In accordance with their specific standards, which differ significantly in the test set-up and execution, products have to withstand a defined number of freeze-thaw cycles (FTC) without suffering any frost damage. In application, the products are exposed to extreme loads with resulting damage.
