What does “Fritz” the clay owl have in common with a cloister brick? – At Ziegelwerk Klaus Huber GmbH & Co. KG both are handmade

Ziegelwerk Klaus Huber GmbH & Co. KG in Graupzig, near the porcelain centre of Meissen, is one of only few brickworks in Germany to specialize in the manufacture of niche products. Besides “ordinary” bricks, it makes products for monument conservation, loam-based building materials and both historical and modern roof ornaments – it does this on modern equipment, but partly still by hand.

1 History

The origins of this brickworks go back to the 1880s when it manufactured clay roofing tiles and masonry bricks as a seasonal brickworks for the local manor. The raw materials available to a brickworks were and are still good today. The loams from the hills of the Lommatzscher Pflege and clays from the Meissen region are extracted and prepared accordingly.

In the Second World War the brickworks was closed down. In 1945 Xaver Huber, father of the current owner Klaus Huber, bought the site and the installations and reopened the brickworks. At this time, the raw material was still won by...
