Spanish brick and tile industry 2023: increased production figures,
decreased sales figures

The Spanish Association of Bricks and Roof Tiles, Hispalyt, presented on 11 June at a press conference the sector‘s data for the year 2023.

Data from the bricks and tiles sector 2023

The number of companies has remained unchanged at 130 since 2020. That represents a period of stability, after the gra-dual decline in previous years.

Production in 2023 was 5.6 million tonnes, which represents an increase of 5,65 percent compared to 2022 (5.3 million tonnes).

Turnover in 2023 reached a value of 720 million euro, 15,5 percent less compared to 2022 (850 million euro).

The number of employees in 2023 was 4,790 employees,  5,3 percent more than 2022 (4,550). The number of female employees in 2023 was 580, an increase of 12,6 percent compared to 2022 (515).

According to the vice-president of Hispalyt, Francisco Rodríguez, “our industry remains faithful to its commitment to incorporate women and new professionals in a sector, such as construction, with many opportunities for job development and a shortage of skilled labour. That is why Hispalyt will continue to work together with the sector’s agents to promote the training and incorporation of young people who want to develop a professional career”.

Production and sales by product type 2023

According to the production data provided, bricks and blocks for cladding represent more than three fourths (77,4 percent) of the total production output. Roofing tiles amount to 8 percent, followed by facing bricks (6 percent).

As far as exports are concerned, according to Francisco Rodríguez, roofing tiles and facing bricks still lead sales abroad, in some cases accounting for 60 percent of production.

The value of exports of the brick and tile sector in 2023 was 108.50 million euro, 17 percent less than in 2022 (130.07 million euro). However, the 2023 results are more than 13.1 percent higher than in 2021 (95.93 million euro) and 63.8 percent more than in 2020 (66.23 million euro).

According to the vice-president of Hispalyt “we can say that our sector maintains its stable figures and consolidates as one of the main players in the world of construction, leading the current trends in building in terms of safety, efficiency, sustainability and design”.
