Germany’s brick and tile industry: Back on the rise

The economic upswing has now reached Germany brick people, too, if somewhat belatedly. Following the crisis of 2009 and last year‘s long, hard winter, the sector‘s economic indicators are pointing upwards again. Even last year, in 2010, the German brick and tile industry was registering incremental growth in all product ranges and, hence, putting a gradual end to the recent dramatic downswing.

1 Masonry bricks

According to data provided by the Federal Statistical Office, masonry brick output in 2010 was 7.7% higher than in 2009 (after a drop of 15.5% in 2009). Last year‘s masonry brick production totalled 6.4 million m³ (2009: 6.0 million m³). While sales remained hesitant in 2010 due to the hard and early onset of winter, demand has been very brisk this spring, so even the made-to-stock bricks have now been sold and delivered.
