On October 1, 2013, the EU launched a three-year research project called Insysme – Innovative Systems for Earthquake Resistant Masonry Enclosures in Reinforced Concrete Buildings. Coordinated by Padua University, 16 partners from six European countries (Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Turkey) are taking part. The German partners are the Bonn-based masonry brick task force Arbeitsgemeinschaft Mauerziegel, the University of Kassel and the consulting firm SDA engineering in Herzogenrath. The German partners’ objective is to develop innovative infill systems made of monolithic, insulating brick masonry offering not only high seismic safety but also reliable fulfilment of increasingly stringent wind resistance requirements. SDA will be responsible for integrating the findings into the already well established Minea software solution. The project is being promoted via the EU Commission’s 7th framework programme.
