1 Geological background and site

Since 1952 diabase has been extracted at Huneberg Quarry and processed to high-quality aggregate and building materials mixes for traffic route engineering. The quarry operated by Kemna Bau Andreae GmbH & Co. KG is located directly on the B4 road between Bad Harzburg and Torfhaus. It is currently working seven levels with a total height of around 150 m. As a result of deep physical-chemical weathering processes, the diabase has been decomposed to 50 m below the surface of the site and transformed into primary ferruginous clay.
