1.5 mill. new homes possible in Germany with add-on storeys

A big chance to build more homes in Germany can be found on the roofs: more than 1.5 mill. additional homes could be built with add-on storeys. This is the finding of a study presented by Darmstadt University of Technology and the Pestel Institute in Hanover.

So that this potential can be utilized quickly, the German government should create incentives and enable special depreciation for add-on storeys too, say the researchers. The focus of the study was the reserves of living space on apartment blocks built between 1950 and 1990. Just with add-on storeys on around 580 000 of these post-war buildings, 1.12 mill. homes could be built in regions with an overstretched housing market, says the study. In addition, a further 420 000 homes could be created on buildings constructed before 1950.

Initiators of the study are eleven organizations and associations in the German planning, construction and property sectors.
