40 Percent more Stability
The newly developed WS09 CORISO PLUS brick is extraordinarily load-bearing and is expected to revolutionise building construction, especially in conurbations.
Up to now, brick masonry has reached its load limits in large-volume residential buildings with more than five or six full storeys. With the WS09 CORISO PLUS, Hörl+Hartmann now presents the world‘s most stable exterior wall brick. Thanks to a characteristic masonry compressive strength of fk 5.9 MN/m² according to DIN EN 1996 (EC6), the brick can withstand a load of up to 590 tonnes on one square metre of wall. Thanks to this property, the monolithic solid construction method can play a much greater role in multi-storey residential construction in the future – even in building projects where only concrete has been considered so far.
„We have succeeded in improving our previous top product in terms of load-bearing capacity by an 40 percent. We can proudly say that a brick has never been so stable,“ says Michael Hörl, Managing Director at Hörl+Hartmann. Thanks to the enormous load-bearing capacity, it is possible to lay bricks even higher up. This benefits modern multi-storey residential construction in particular and makes an important contribution to affordable housing. If you build upwards, less building land is needed. In addition, monolithic brick construction is considered particularly economical, as it has clear advantages in terms of both construction and follow-up costs. The compact construction method also improves the energy balance.
Investments pay off
The seriously improved load-bearing capacity is the result of years of research and development. „Bricks are high-tech. There is no single adjusting screw, it is an interaction of different parameters. If you want to improve the load-bearing capacity of a brick, you also have to keep other important values such as insulation properties, sound and fire protection at a high level,“ says Hörl. In the case of WS09 CORISO PLUS, an optimised hole pattern, the nature of the raw materials and improved firing processes played a decisive role. In the end, it was possible to achieve the characteristic masonry compressive strength of fk 5.9 MN/m² from a wall thickness of 30 cm. With a lambda value of 0.09 W/(mK) and U-values of 0.28 to 0.20 W/(m²K), the brick is also suitable for energy-efficient buildings according to the KfW standard - without additional insulation on the outer wall. In the WS09 CORISO PLUS, mineral insulation is already integrated into the brick. Sound and fire protection also reliably meet the legal requirements.
Why building with brick is sustainable
The building material brick is well-balanced in terms of ecological, economic and constructional aspects. In life cycle assessments, which consider the entire life cycle of new buildings, monolithic brick construction occupies a top position. However, not only the environment, but also the residents benefit from clearly noticeable effects: The brick-typical, unique interplay of thermal insulation, heat storage and thermal conductivity ensures comfort in the living spaces all year round, even in the case of weather extremes associated with climate change, and contributes directly to well-being.
