Braas’ 60-Year Celebration

Monier Braas GmbH supplies one-stop material resources for gently pitched roofs. Everything from concrete/clay roof tiles to roofing system components, PV/solar-thermal systems and insulation, up to and including an all-in range of services, is available all under the well-known Braas label. This year, the company can look back on a 60-year history that began on August 13, 1953, when Rudolf H. Braas founded his own, private enterprise, the Braas & Co GmbH.

1953 was a good year for founding a concrete roof tile factory, since post-war Germany was in dire need of construction material. Eight years earlier in Austria, Rudolf H. Braas had already designed a roof tile machine based on information he had gathered in England about the industrial manufacture of concrete roof tiles from 1925 on. Indeed, his liaison with Redland Ltd., a British producer of building materials, is what led to the founding of their joint venture Braas & Co GmbH on August 13, 1953. That same year, the parent plant was erected in Heusen-stamm near Frankfurt am Main, and the first product‘s name was quickly found: the Frankfurter Pfanne (Frankfurt pantile). It became a smashing success as soon as it hit the market.

Evolving into a system supplier

As the economic upswing gathered steam in the years to follow, architectural standards became more demanding – so Braas kept improving their production and application technology and expanding their product array. In addition to introducing new pantile models, Braas also added a number of new special shapes and accessories: witness the birth of the system roof. All across Germany, Braas‘ products became a synonym for on-roof quality.

After ten years of success in Germany, Braas decided to ply the European market. In 1963, the company‘s first foreign production facility opened in the Dutch town of Montfoort. More plants followed in Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Denmark. Braas now operates under the umbrella of the Monier Group, a global supplier of pitched roof construction materials.

In Germany, Monier Braas GmbH is the leading supplier of intelligent roof systems. At Braas, not only is product quality being continually improved, but things like sustainability and energy efficiency are likewise in focus. In addition, Braas has become well established as a pitched roof system supplier. Concrete and clay roof tiles, insulation, photovoltaic/solar-thermal systems, fasteners, roof ornaments:  The Braas product range includes all these intelligent roof-system components and many more to go, and they have all been tested for good intercompatibility and mutually attuned to perfection in function, colour and material.

In Germany, the Braas workforce counts 1200 employees at 17 different locations.
