Building completions in 2015: +1.0% year on year
Compared to 2014, some 2 400 more housing units (+1%) were completed in Germany last year. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) the total number came to 247 700. With that, the positive trend that started in 2011 was still holding on in 2015. The last year in which even more housing units were completed (255 600) was 2006.
Of all the new residences completed in 2015, 216 700 were apartments in domestic buildings (+0.3% over 2014). That gain consisted chiefly of completed units in multi-family residentials (+ 4.0%, or + 4 100 units). The number of dormitory units also increased (+ 8.1 % or + 700 units). By contrast, fewer new duplex units (- 4.6 % or - 900 units) and single-family homes (- 3.7 % or - 3300 units) were completed.
The cumulative net building volume of newly completed non-residential buildings dropped to 178.8 mill. m³ (down 3.5 % compared to 2014). The decline was split almost evenly between the public sector (- 3.2 mill. m3/- 17.8 %) and the private sector (- 3.3 mill. m3/- 2.0 %).
